Before you buy dental insurance, read this!

Having insurance always seems like a good idea, especially when it comes to your health. No one likes to be stuck with a large bill for an unexpected emergency. Unfortunately, most dental insurance plans aren’t anything like the medical insurance plans we are accustomed to.

With health insurance, you pay your deductible, and then a significantly smaller portion of the remainder of the bill. Dental insurance coverage is the opposite. You receive a certain amount of coverage, and after that, you’re responsible to pay the balance of the bill.

While dental insurance typically covers most preventive dental care (which costs about as much as your premiums) it may cover very little actual dental work, which is most likely the reason you bought the plan in the first place – for help with major, more expensive procedures. And did you know that the majority of caps on payouts for dental insurance haven’t changed since the 1970s? That means most consumers have to pay out of pocket, or wait until the following year, for procedures such as root canals or crowns, which cost more than twice what they did when Nixon was in office! Not to mention complicated exclusions, deductibles, and dealing with insurance call centers!

It’s hard to believe that companies are even calling what they are offering “insurance”. In essence, the majority of dental plans are really a form of prepayment, with narrowly defined benefits, where it’s difficult to recoup the cost of your premiums.

As a consumer, you do have an alternative to high priced and complicated dental insurance plans with little benefits and a poor return on your investment. You don’t have to gamble on how much dental care you might need, or delay necessary treatment due to plan restrictions.
